Heroine Movie Review

Heroine serves us with same old "Madhur" taste of film making & watching. Liked Fashion? You may like this too. But, as for me, Heroine was tasteless except for the heroine of Heroine impressed again with her stunning performance. Keep going Bebo & keep falling Madhur (I seriously hate his scripts now). Watch it only if you're one of the huge fans of Kareena, otherwise its a sheer waste of time.

Heroine, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar opens with genuine promise, but very quickly collapses into a heap of lazy stereotypes. Despite an entertaining first half, thanks to all the unintentional laughs, Heroine slips into a slush of melodrama post interval. By this point, it feels interminably long and boring. I was excited about the film because I thought what a perfect match of director and material. But sadly, Heroine never rises to the occasion. Madhur and his many co-writers bung in plenty of masala – alcohol, affairs, a sex tape, even a short-lived lesbian lover. But Heroine doesn’t even deliver the guilty thrill of a tabloid. It’s just limp and more annoyingly, boring.

Kareena Kapoor is outstanding in the title role. The starkness of Heroine may be liked by the elite audience but it is this very starkness which will greatly limit the film’s box-office potential. The script and narrative is poorly-written and the characters are stereotype, lacking structure. Director Madhur Bhandarkar is known for his hard-hitting cinema but disappoints the audience with Heroine. The music is composed by Salim-Sulaiman which is above average but not memorable. Heroine would have been crisper had it not digressed to cover every Bollywood insider account. The film is made enjoyable by some pithy dialogue credited to Niranjan Iyengar. Of course the saving grace of the film is Kareena who not only looks drop-dead gorgeous but is also adept as the girl interrupted. Heroine is Kareena's Dirty Picture. The only reason to watch Madhur Bhandarkar’s films is for the way they go behind the headlines and show us the dirt and the hurt that’s usually brushed under frayed rags and burnished carpets. The foremost problem with Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine is that behind its gossamer exterior, it is weighed down by banalities that don't quite add up. Heroine is drably monotonous, its insights are shallow, most of the characters are caricatures and the lines that they speak border on the corny, if not on the outright ridiculous. The premise of the film, like every other film of Bhandarkar's, remains the same. Wronged lead protagonist, Cheating lover, Rising and then eventually falling and slowly fading in career are same old Madhur's ingredients for a film. The film has a very linear narrative and for the greater part of the first half, one keeps wondering what exactly the plot is. Welcome to the cesspool of enchantment or ‘glamour ka daldal’ as director Madhur Bhandarkar would like to articulate. The misplaced confidence ensures that the research department is sacked and most dialogues begin with ‘Humaari industry mein’… and end with ‘manipulate karo ya ho jao’, ‘zip aur zabaan sambhalke kholna chahiye’, ‘confidence se bolo toh jhooth ko bhi sach maana jaata hain’, ‘heroines ka waqt bohot kam hota hain’ . Kareena Kapoor steals the show with her dead-drop gorgeous looks and stupendous performance. The movie reveals the delightful, bold, shocking, scandalous, sensitive exposing scenes behind the glitz and glamour that our film stars reside. Well, hold on for a minute! Doesn't that sound a known plot? On the whole, Heroine is old wine in new bottle. The film lacks life and passion and moreover drably monotonous.
