Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is a schmaltzy, sentimental saga of the love between a boy and his horse. At nearly 2 hours and 30 minutes, War Horse practically drowns in sappiness. To be fair, it’s not hard to be moved by the film’s final moments, but that’s emotional manipulation for you. I’m going with two out of five for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. It’s so long and exhausting, I dub this film ‘Bore Horse’……Read Full Review

Technically superb, proudly sentimental, and unabashedly old-fashioned, War Horse is an emotional drama that tugs the heartstrings with Spielberg's customary flair......Read Full Review

The message Steven Spielberg's War Horse gives out could not have been more contemporary -- why wage war when it leads to nothing. It's for the ultimate humane message the animal gives out: We ought to be careful not to start a war. Only for those over 25... who usually like their man-and-beast movies with an extra dose of seriousness......Read Full Review

Spielberg's version of the equine first world war yarn is an unconvincing attempt at summoning up the spirit of the time. Suffused in a buttery-digital glow, as if shot on special film made of liquid fudge, Steven Spielberg's disappointing, coercively sentimental version of War Horse has a baffling, soulless, artificial look......Read Full Review

Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is a soaring, sprawling epic that harks back to the dream-big visionaries of old Hollywood. This is filmmaking on a grand scale, bound by a grand vision, bolstered by grand performances and swept along by a grand old John Williams soundtrack. There’s not quite something for everyone, but the cynics can trot on: there’s something for everyone else......Read Full Review

The film is so heartfelt and marvelously crafted by Spielberg, cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, editor Michael Kahn and screenwriters Lee Hall and Richard Curtis that odious comparisons are swept away. War Horse gets to you. It's one from the heart......Read Full Review

The project is tailor-made for Saving Private Ryan Spielberg, the war-story specialist, as well as for E.T. Spielberg, the chronicler of boyhood desires and yearnings for family......Read Full Review

You may find yourself resisting this sentimental pageant of early-20th-century rural English life, replete with verdant fields, muddy tweeds and damp turnips, but my strong advice is to surrender......Read Full Review

The film is made with superb artistry. Spielberg is the master of an awesome canvas. Most people will enjoy it, as I did. But not included in the picture is the level of sheer hopeless tragedy that is everywhere just out frame......Read Full Review

The trouble here is not so much that Spielberg's film staunchly insists on finding a happy ending even in the calamity of the First World War, but that he slathers it on so thick and leaves so soft an impression......Read Full Review

"War Horse" is likely too intense for many children, while probably too maudlin for many adults. But Spielberg is going for middle ground here, reveling in classic storytelling while showing his technical mastery of the medium. The result isn't groundbreaking, but it's gratifying......Read Full Review
