Tame superficiality is indeed the biggest bane of English Vinglish, which, for the most part, is otherwise reasonably watchable, especially owing to a charming performance by Sridevi. Thankfully the movie doesn’t over-play. It’s subtle. English is a strong, silly Indian urban divide. No Indian film has captured this aspect as wonderfully as this.
